Meet Joan Stuart Ross this week for Ballard Night In. Thursday 6pm - 7pm https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83324180473?pwd=Tkg2UlFKR0Y2TElLb3BQOXdjSjBYdz09 Artist Statement: My work is inspired by exploratory imagery and inventions of color within relationships, connections, juxtapositions and dynamic arrangements. My art’s search for life force, energy, and meaning is to engage color and shape as value and depth. Metaphorical form, complementary and analogous colors, symbols and glyphs suggest a vital undercurrent. The forms in my paintings, prints, and drawings are inspired by growth--the poplar tree, hydrangea blossom, oyster shell, the grid, and implied text. Color, mark, rhythm, repetition, pattern and diversion reveal my visual reach and extension. See more of Joan's work at: www.joanstuartross.com/index.html
Meet on of the artists behind BallardWorks, John Clark Gleason, this week for Ballard Night In. (4/8 6pm - 7pm https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83324180473?pwd=Tkg2UlFKR0Y2TElLb3BQOXdjSjBYdz09) Artist Statement from John Clark Gleason: As a youth, I spent time on the Washington coast, swam in its frigid waters and dug for clams. Later, I worked in the woods for a lumber company and felt the “high lonesome” of wind and weather. I want to impart the mind-set of those experiences to those who view my work. I paint the mountains, waterways, and verdant landscapes that surround us in the Northwest, and also in the Southwest. I think about their relationships to urban experience and to the research that supports our knowledge that the mountains, woods and waters aid our mental health. I have been melding the experience of that Northwest expansiveness with corresponding colors and shapes evident in the Southwest--a landscape of space, mountains, rushing water, red rock, and green rivers’ edges. These terrains combine in my work as necessary components of our inner/outer natural landscape. My paintings are inspired by the world as a setting for the evolution of the seasons and of nature’s elements as felt by personal experience and imagination. I am fascinated by the monumentality of open spaces. I use oil and acrylic paint on canvas. I combine a furry brush stroke with the definitive mark of simple tools to create soft and hard areas in my landscapes—visual places of activity, contemplation, and rest. I want to give the viewer an idea of the sky’s etherealness, earth’s durable, linear elements, river water’s flow, and mountains’ majesty. My work is colorful and celebratory. I see it as a journey with an imaginary map that leads the viewer into a shared, yet mysterious story. My paintings are portable, intimate, inclusive. They embody references to experiences felt in nature and in the mind’s eye, illusions and yearnings for connections with Nature that belong to people from all walks of life, every country, race, age, gender, and philosophy. David Smith is the owner/operator of Blowing Sands Glass. He was introduced to the art of glass blowing in 1978 while studying for a degree in Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. His final two years were spent in the Materials Artifacts Laboratory where he did analysis on man's earliest evidence of ceramic processing, the pigment used in cave paintings, and worked on the project tracing the transfer of porcelain technology from China down the silk road to Europe. His thesis subject was soft-paste porcelain produced in France during the 18th Century. After graduation, in 1983, he returned to Seattle and started working full-time as a glass blower. In 1987, he bought a one-way ticket to China and then traveled across Asia and the Soviet Union, and spent the next 5 years living and working with artists in Finland, Germany, France and Ireland. He returned to Seattle in 1992 and established his own studio/hot-shop in Ballard. His art glass has been collected and appreciated around the world, and his glass castings are installed in the Atlanta Federal Building as well as public and private buildings in the northwest. His work is an extension of his technical background in glass science and his love of the traditions and history of glass blowing throughout the world. As we hit year two of the Covid-19 pandemic, we realize it's more critical than ever to support artists in the community. We're organizing Ballard Night In every Thursday of 2021 and until we can see you at an art opening in-person. 6pm - 7pm you can log into our webcast to connect with local artists, musicians, performers and creative people in the community. Participants will receive a stipend for their time. You can apply to be featured at the Ballard Night In Submission link above.
To join the meeting, log in to your Zoom account and use the meeting information: Meeting ID: 833 2418 0473 Passcode: Ballard Follow us here, on Meetup or Facebook for the details. Events start March 11th, featured artists to be announced soon. Ballard Night Out, a program run by Greater Ballard Arts, is switching gears for 2021 after its year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is returning in xxxx as a weekly webcast. Ballard Night In will feature artists, performers, musicians, and arts venues in the greater Ballard community every Thursday from 6pm - 7 pm. In addition, Greater Ballard Arts will feature a new calendar of virtual and COVID-safe events starting in spring 2021.
Greater Ballard Arts was established in early 2017 by Maxx Follis-Goodkind and members of the Ballard community. Ballard Night Out has been managed by Follis-Goodkind and members of the Push/Pull collective since 2019. “Combining officially means we can better use funds and resources, plus cut down on expenses,” said Follis-Goodkind. The addition of Ballard Night Out and Greater Ballard Arts to Push/Pull’s programming helps advance the art collective’s mission to support sustainable careers for artists and to build connections between artists and the community. Artists, performers, musicians, and creators can apply to be featured on Ballard Night In through the Ballard Night Out website. Featured creators will receive a stipend for participating. Event organizers in the greater Ballard area can also submit their events to the Greater Ballard Arts calendar now. When we started Ballard Night Out we had bigger dreams of supporting artists every day of the year, not just 12. You may have noticed that we're presented by "Greater Ballard Arts". It has always been our goal to use Greater Ballard Arts to showcase the wonderful cultural work happening in Ballard every day. Now is the perfect time to do that.
Instead of mourning the cancellation of our monthly event, we're making plans to support artists every day through this site and Greater Ballard Arts. If you're an artist in the Ballard area and interested in having your work featured, contact Maxx at maxx@ballardnightout. com. And if you want to support the work we're doing, you can donate at givebigwa.org/ballardnightout With the announcement of mandatory closures and limited groups, we have made the decision to press pause on Ballard Night Out for March. We will not be encouraging visits to venues and will instead be using this space to post about how you can support the artists and venues in Ballard. We hope that you will shop online, buy gift certificates and get take out when possible.

He settled in Seattle where he lives and works. His works are largely mixed media combining layers of photographic films, resin, paintings, metals, paper, reflective films and media. As a high school student Michael won the industrial arts award in photography for studies of microscopic crystallization formations. At the University of Washington, he studied painting, printmaking and digital photography and began combining photographic and traditional painting and drawing processes with digital technologies. In the late 1990s he began experimenting with large format digital printers and software. These experiments created a new path for Michael’s artistic output and expression which continues in his current work. Michael’s work is an expression of an experimentally curious mind. He likes to make more work for himself by posing disparate materials together in the tradition of Sigmar Polke; industrial materials, traditional paintings, photography both his own and appropriated from the web; a lifetime process that comes together and speaks of his concerns for the future of humanity and the planet. **Visitors during Ballard Night Out receive a dollar off a pint when you let them know we sent you!
