Adam Michael Waldo at Captain's Nautical Supplies

Venue: Captain's Nautical Supplies / 1120 NW Ballard Way
Event: October 19th 6pm - 9pm

Showing: October 19th - December 19th

Captain's Nautical Supplies will be featuring the nature photography of Adam Michael Waldo October 19th - December 19th. Stop in to see the new pieces during Ballard Night Out, October 19th 6pm - 9pm.

Adam Michael Waldo is a photographer, adventurer, and model based out of Seattle, Washington. A life-long passion for travel informs both his world-view and his artwork. The work he produces gives expression to a fascination with form in all its stark beauty, strength, and simplicity. There is a visceral quality to his work that highlights the subtle immediacy of what is essential. The strength of his vision lies in his ability to show us the aesthetic webbing of reality—the conjuring of universality in the particular. A landscape, a sea-worn piece of driftwood, the spires, angles, and planes of a skyscraper or telephone pole—things that within each of our daily lives we may see, relish briefly (not exactly knowing what about it moves us), and then go on without a second thought—these he sets about stripping with near surgical precision in order to coax to life an impression that sticks with us long after we have viewed it through his eyes. Like the landscapes Hemingway describes through language, Waldo peels away sentimentality, subjectivity, and all that lends itself to cut-rate, overly-emotionalized artwork so that one is confronted with a thing the way that it truly is in itself. This uncompromising dedication to the representation of form strikes deeply not only into his portrayal of a specific subject, but also into the mind and being of his viewer. We recognize—though may not always have the words to describe—the exact clarity and strength of his vision. Lesser artists constantly seek to endow their subject matter with the colors of their own emotions, with the result being something lacking in universality. Waldo recognizes (as did Hemingway, Kubrick, and Frank Lloyd Wright) that the essence of the subject belongs to the subject alone. The subjects he chooses reveal themselves to us in their most stark or delicate skin—we are left confronting the thing itself, in all of its uninterpretable splendor. This is why his photography stays with us; this is why certain artists’ work remains just as alive and vital now as it was years ago. We are confronted the mysterious building blocks of the universe in his pictures. We are startled by the mysterious building blocks of ourselves in his pictures.

Robert Calafiore & Joseph Minek: Color Darkroom Innovators at GALLERY 1/1

Show: Color Darkroom Innovators
Artists: Robert Calafiore & Joseph Minek gallery1of1.com/Exhibit_Detail.cfm?ShowsID=79
Venue: Gallery 1/1 / 2856 NW Market St Ste 2G in BallardWorks
Event: October 19th 6pm - 9pm
Showing: Now through November 11th

GALLERY 1/1 is pleased to present the West Coast debuts of two innovative photographic artists, Hartford-based Robert Calafiore and Cleveland-based Joseph Minek. This two-person exhibition will feature new work by these artists who embrace process, material, and traditional darkroom techniques and each has elevated their studio-based craft into an exciting direction for photography. Calafiore employs his hand-built pinhole camera to create vivid large-scale one-of-a-kind chromogenic prints of abstracted still life tableaus constructed with mid-century modern glass objects. Minek also has a modernist abstract painterly quality to his work that he achieves by applying photographic chemistry on light sensitive color paper breaking all the traditional darkroom rules. He then assembles the paper elements into collaged mosaics of striking form and color.

Robert Sparrow Jones at Blowing Sands Glass Studio

Artist: Robert Sparrow Jones / robertsparrowjones.com/
Venue: Blowing Sands Glass Studio / 5805 14th Ave NW
Event: October 19th 6pm - 9pm
Showing: October 1st - October 30th

Robert Sparrow Jones:  "I am interested in narrative; storytelling through pictures evoking a deep sense of place.  What moves me to make these works is the trifecta of memory, love, and the passage of time.  The pictures serve as a shifting cross-section---using color, tone, and an expressive languor in paint language, to create a local dialect that, although uneven, I think vividly captures the energy, the mutability, or perhaps the stubborn persistence of what it's like to be affected by place. They are meant to act in the present but suggest a past, moving in the rhythm of everyday like that is rife with multiple time signatures.  The figures are intended to add atmosphere to past peregrinations and dalliances and knit the uncertainties of our life's complications into such a lovely, changeable shifting.  the emotional landscape emerges when our attentiveness to the sensual world brings a certain mutable responsiveness from the imperatives of consciousness."
