Show: Golem, A Family History
Artist: Julia Wald
Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW
Event: December 19th 6pm - 9pm
Showing: Through January 14th
Join us for the opening of Golem: A Family History by Julia Wald. Julia has been illustrating her family's history and will be sharing this very personal show with us at Push/Pull. Opening December 19th for Ballard Night Out 6pm - 9pm. Showing through January 14th.
I am a jew. My family’s history has been tied to this word and their immigration patterns and destinies shaped by it. My grandpa left Germany in 1936 because he was a jew. My Eastern European family fled Russia during the revolution for the same reason. I am an American citizen because my family was lucky enough to escape their respective countries just in time.
The Golem is a Jewish anthropomorphic creature that can be a monster, a savior, a hero to the Jewish people, or a villain. The creature is created from the earth—stones, mud, and clay. The conjuring of a Golem can mean hope or despair. My family’s collective history can be summed up pretty nicely as a combination of hope and despair, monsters and saviors.
Julia Wald is an artist and illustrator based in Seattle Washington. She often uses india ink pens in her work, exploring line, pattern, and texture. Her subject matter ranges from cityscapes, index card monsters, and comics. She was just awarded a 2019 Artist Trust GAP Grant to continue working on this project—The Golem: A Family History and plans on using the funds to turn the comics about her family into a book.
