Ballard Night Out, a program run by Greater Ballard Arts, is switching gears for 2021 after its year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is returning in xxxx as a weekly webcast. Ballard Night In will feature artists, performers, musicians, and arts venues in the greater Ballard community every Thursday from 6pm - 7 pm. In addition, Greater Ballard Arts will feature a new calendar of virtual and COVID-safe events starting in spring 2021.
Greater Ballard Arts was established in early 2017 by Maxx Follis-Goodkind and members of the Ballard community. Ballard Night Out has been managed by Follis-Goodkind and members of the Push/Pull collective since 2019. “Combining officially means we can better use funds and resources, plus cut down on expenses,” said Follis-Goodkind. The addition of Ballard Night Out and Greater Ballard Arts to Push/Pull’s programming helps advance the art collective’s mission to support sustainable careers for artists and to build connections between artists and the community. Artists, performers, musicians, and creators can apply to be featured on Ballard Night In through the Ballard Night Out website. Featured creators will receive a stipend for participating. Event organizers in the greater Ballard area can also submit their events to the Greater Ballard Arts calendar now. When we started Ballard Night Out we had bigger dreams of supporting artists every day of the year, not just 12. You may have noticed that we're presented by "Greater Ballard Arts". It has always been our goal to use Greater Ballard Arts to showcase the wonderful cultural work happening in Ballard every day. Now is the perfect time to do that.
Instead of mourning the cancellation of our monthly event, we're making plans to support artists every day through this site and Greater Ballard Arts. If you're an artist in the Ballard area and interested in having your work featured, contact Maxx at maxx@ballardnightout. com. And if you want to support the work we're doing, you can donate at givebigwa.org/ballardnightout With the announcement of mandatory closures and limited groups, we have made the decision to press pause on Ballard Night Out for March. We will not be encouraging visits to venues and will instead be using this space to post about how you can support the artists and venues in Ballard. We hope that you will shop online, buy gift certificates and get take out when possible.

As a high school student Michael won the industrial arts award in photography for studies of microscopic crystallization formations. At the University of Washington, he studied painting, printmaking and digital photography and began combining photographic and traditional painting and drawing processes with digital technologies. In the late 1990s he began experimenting with large format digital printers and software. These experiments created a new path for Michael’s artistic output and expression which continues in his current work. Michael’s work is an expression of an experimentally curious mind. He likes to make more work for himself by posing disparate materials together in the tradition of Sigmar Polke; industrial materials, traditional paintings, photography both his own and appropriated from the web; a lifetime process that comes together and speaks of his concerns for the future of humanity and the planet. **Visitors during Ballard Night Out receive a dollar off a pint when you let them know we sent you! Artist Statement: I am a jew. My family’s history has been tied to this word and their immigration patterns and destinies shaped by it. My grandpa left Germany in 1936 because he was a jew. My Eastern European family fled Russia during the revolution for the same reason. I am an American citizen because my family was lucky enough to escape their respective countries just in time. The Golem is a Jewish anthropomorphic creature that can be a monster, a savior, a hero to the Jewish people, or a villain. The creature is created from the earth—stones, mud, and clay. The conjuring of a Golem can mean hope or despair. My family’s collective history can be summed up pretty nicely as a combination of hope and despair, monsters and saviors. Artist Bio: Julia Wald is an artist and illustrator based in Seattle Washington. She often uses india ink pens in her work, exploring line, pattern, and texture.
