Ballard Night Out, a program run by Greater Ballard Arts, is switching gears for 2021 after its year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is returning in xxxx as a weekly webcast. Ballard Night In will feature artists, performers, musicians, and arts venues in the greater Ballard community every Thursday from 6pm - 7 pm. In addition, Greater Ballard Arts will feature a new calendar of virtual and COVID-safe events starting in spring 2021.
Greater Ballard Arts was established in early 2017 by Maxx Follis-Goodkind and members of the Ballard community. Ballard Night Out has been managed by Follis-Goodkind and members of the Push/Pull collective since 2019. “Combining officially means we can better use funds and resources, plus cut down on expenses,” said Follis-Goodkind. The addition of Ballard Night Out and Greater Ballard Arts to Push/Pull’s programming helps advance the art collective’s mission to support sustainable careers for artists and to build connections between artists and the community. Artists, performers, musicians, and creators can apply to be featured on Ballard Night In through the Ballard Night Out website. Featured creators will receive a stipend for participating. Event organizers in the greater Ballard area can also submit their events to the Greater Ballard Arts calendar now.

Julia has been illustrating her family's history and will be sharing this very personal show with us at Push/Pull. Opening December 19th for Ballard Night Out 6pm - 9pm. Showing through January 14th. Artist Statement: I am a jew. My family’s history has been tied to this word and their immigration patterns and destinies shaped by it. My grandpa left Germany in 1936 because he was a jew. My Eastern European family fled Russia during the revolution for the same reason. I am an American citizen because my family was lucky enough to escape their respective countries just in time. The Golem is a Jewish anthropomorphic creature that can be a monster, a savior, a hero to the Jewish people, or a villain. The creature is created from the earth—stones, mud, and clay. The conjuring of a Golem can mean hope or despair. My family’s collective history can be summed up pretty nicely as a combination of hope and despair, monsters and saviors. Artist Bio: Julia Wald is an artist and illustrator based in Seattle Washington. She often uses india ink pens in her work, exploring line, pattern, and texture. Her subject matter ranges from cityscapes, index card monsters, and comics. She was just awarded a 2019 Artist Trust GAP Grant to continue working on this project—The Golem: A Family History and plans on using the funds to turn the comics about her family into a book. Opening October 17th, showing through November 19th. Stop in for Ballard's only fine art gallery in a bathroom. Jon Garaizar is a Seattle artist from the Bay Area. He works in print, ink and comic form to explore the world metaphor, conspiracy, UFO's, esoterica, and time travel. His work examines and highlights the endless loop of conspiracy and mania, it's mirrors and origins in reality, and how we build the cruel, unreal world that forces us to craft such fantastic tales. His current projects can be seen on instagram @enchanting_stranger Artist: Myra Lara
Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW Event: October 17th 6pm - 9pm Showing through: November 18th www.facebook.com/events/339552316983070/ When the neighborhood Prius has the tasteless Malthusian slogan "Seattle is Full", you know you're in the technocratic city. When superyachts are "sustainable" but your commute is not, you know you're in the technocratic city. When police are thanked during private "community" Pride events but queer and POC spaces are still overpoliced, you know you're in the technocratic city. Lifeswork towards frivolous apps, efficiency, "smarter" economies and "authentic" experiences but silence when evictions, rent burden, low wages, and homelessness increase - but don't worry, the next private-public partnership will handle it in time. That's life in the technocratic city. Ready to find your coping mechanism? Bio: Myra Lara is an architectural designer, cartoonist, and activist whose work focuses on the right to the city, housing policy, genderqueerness, and multicultural everyday life. Drawing on her many disciplines, taught by institution and untaught by self, she explores these topics via comix, zines, protest art, and tweeting. She's originally from a bordertown in south Texas and has been living in Seattle off-and-on since 2010. You can find her at @nullthread and www.myralara.com Artist: Hayden Stern (Bioluminator Studios) bioluminator.bigcartel.com/
Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW Event: September 19th 6pm - 9pm www.facebook.com/events/2465410593497881/ Join us for the opening of Hayden Stern (Bioluminator Studios) show featuring original works from their Trans Tarot series. Showing September 19th through October 15th. The Trans Tarot is a deck illustrated from submitted selfies from the transgender community. Each image celebrates the enormous range of presentation, identity, and life experience that trans people bring to the table. The deck was borne out of the concept that gender, like tarot, is a mystical process of transformation. As a transgender individual, the artist has used symbolism to understand their identity amidst a gendered society. It is their hope that this deck will resonate with their community while inspiring cisgender individuals to examine their own relationship with society, gender, and embodiment. Hayden Stern is an artist whose work is informed by the experience of living in a trans, disabled body. They create two dimensional art in ink, paint, and fiber to tenderly portray the reclamation of body/self in a society that would prefer they were either cured or absent. They are based in unceded Coast Salish Territories (Seattle). ![]() Show: Specswizard & Keef Cross (Dayblack - Atlanta, GA) Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW Event: August 15th 6pm - 9pm www.facebook.com/events/861096594225677/ Showing thru: September 18th Push/Pull is proud to present the work of local artist Michael Hall (aka Specswizard) and Keef Cross (Georgia). Showing through September 18th. Michael D Hall aka Specswizard has been writing and producing hip hop music since 1979--but comics are his first love. He started creating characters and stories when he was just seven years old and he is still at it today. Specs has become a staple in the Seattle hip hop community, and has started to also show his visual art around town, most notably at Steve Gilbert's Studio. He is currently focusing on character designs and pen and ink work for a new comic called the Gibson Comic Anthology that will be published and distributed throughout Seattle and hopefully beyond this summer. Push/Pull is celebrating the culmination of his long awaited book with a show this August along with another notable comic artist and tattooer Keef Cross. KEEF CROSS When I make art, it's truly an escape. An escape from stereotypes and expectations put on "black art" and it's creators. It seems like most people are comfortable seeing black people portrayed walking to church, playing a jazz horn, braiding hair on the porch and things of that nature. There isn't anything wrong with that, but that's not all we are, and that's not all we do. Similar to black cinema and radio, audiences have gotten used to and even anticipate these redundant one sided offerings of black life. Growing up being influenced by Ralph Bakshi, Vaugn Bode', Wendy Pini, and Robert Crumb to name a few, really shaped my visual aesthetic, and tone of my paintings, but even more so, my approach to creating my comic book, "DayBlack". I found that those underground comics of the 70's always had one foot in sexual raunchiness and drugs, and another foot in social commentary, a combination that fascinated me as a kid. Who knew that in those adult comics I hid from my mother, I would find my individual voice and style. I'm all about pushing progressive images and ideas about my people to the forefront whenever I get the chance. TV, radio, and film won't do it, but I feel like art is the last medium that has been corrupted the least, and with the help of other like minded artists who aren't afraid to challenge these notions of what black art is and can be , we can help change the way the world sees us, and the way we see ourselves, one gallery, screen, and book at a time. ![]() Event: The Relevant Unknown, Yearbook Vol 2 Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW July 18th 6pm - 9pm Are you an artist, creator or maker in Seattle? What will happen when three artists come together to create a piece of art - but without being able to see what was already created? Good will be visiting from North Carolina for the opening - do not miss meeting this artist! About Alli Good: Alli Good's paintings and works are quasi-autobiographical exploration of sexuality, feminism, and family, tackled in the dark, surreal, but often humorous style for which she is known. Her paintings, influenced by comic and pop art, depict large, fleshy females in unsparing and sometimes grotesque nudity, exploring deeply-ingrained issues of body image and sexuality. Ultimately, the images are both disturbing and strangely poignant, forming a jagged path to sexuality, beauty, and self-knowledge. ![]() Show: Fruiting Bodies & Efflorescence Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW Event: May 16th 6pm - 9pm www.facebook.com/events/504672536603926/ Showing Through June 18th Join us for a celebration of all things in bloom with the opening of Fruiting Bodies & Efflorescence. Next was my “gateway camera”, a point and shoot. From there it was game on and I was addicted! I am drawn to shape and texture, light and line. My photography is an eclectic blend of abstraction and concentration; representational photos of the natural world are counter-balanced by pictures with deliberately shifted perspectives and focal points. Last year, I completed the Summer Intensive Program at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Montana. I fell in love with the art of printing. Watching my art come to life is as enjoyable as taking photos. I have exhibited in several group shows at community art galleries, and individual shows at local coffee shops, bars, and restaurants in Seattle and Camano Island. Show: Ballard Night Market
