In a twist on the traditional feminist interpretation of the “male gaze,” GALLERY 1/1 presents a new photography exhibition exploring how men see themselves and other men from behind the camera lens. The featured artists address themes of sexual desire, identity, self-reflection, masculinity, and the dynamics of power that are core critiques of the objectifying male gaze. As you know, we specialize in one-of-a-kind alternative and experimental photographic prints adding an exciting and unique challenge to creating this figurative photography show, The Male Gaze.

GALLERY 1/1 is pleased to present the West Coast debuts of two innovative photographic artists, Hartford-based Robert Calafiore and Cleveland-based Joseph Minek. This two-person exhibition will feature new work by these artists who embrace process, material, and traditional darkroom techniques and each has elevated their studio-based craft into an exciting direction for photography. Calafiore employs his hand-built pinhole camera to create vivid large-scale one-of-a-kind chromogenic prints of abstracted still life tableaus constructed with mid-century modern glass objects. Minek also has a modernist abstract painterly quality to his work that he achieves by applying photographic chemistry on light sensitive color paper breaking all the traditional darkroom rules. He then assembles the paper elements into collaged mosaics of striking form and color.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Robert Calafiore employs his hand-built pinhole camera to create vivid large-scale one-of-a-kind chromogenic prints of abstracted still life tableaus. Robert has an extensive collection of mid-century modern glassware and he transforms these vintage glass objects into precarious and futuristic arrangements. His interest in the process, traditional materials, and the reaction between light and chemistry, as well as the personal and universal stories told through everyday objects, drives the work in his studio practice. Elevating the ordinary to the extraordinary, the every day to a magical place, continues to be one of his primary motivators. Robert received his MFA in Photography from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his BFA in Photography from Hartford Art School. Currently, he lives and works in West Hartford, CT where he is the Assistant Dean of the Hartford Art School. His prints have been exhibited widely including the Griffin Museum of Photography, Winchester, MA, Center for Fine Art Photography, Ft. Collins, CO, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY, and Klompching Gallery, Brooklyn, NY.
Joseph Minek focuses on the potentiality of photographic material, most notably its ability to transcend its conventional analysis and use in image-making. By applying photographic chemistry to exposed light sensitive papers, he constructs images whose colors, marks, and compositions reference the aesthetics of modernist abstract paintings while remaining firmly rooted in the realm of photography through size and surface value. Joe’s primary pursuit lies in how photographic material is translated into images beyond the traditional processes, and how these images can influence viewers to reflect on not only what is shown through the imagery but also the possibilities of the photographic medium. He is an artist based in Cleveland, OH and received his MFA in Photography & Film from Virginia Commonwealth University and his BFA in photography from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He has exhibited his work nationally in spaces such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, INDEX, and Capital One Headquarters. Joseph holds busy Adjunct Faculty positions at The Cleveland Institute of Art and Cuyahoga Community College.
