Show: Comfort in the Images of Dogs, Group Show
Venue: BallardWorks / 2856 NW Market St Event: October 17th 6pm - 9pm One Night Only In these days when we face a constant barrage of tough and upsetting news, art can offer balm for the soul, and dogs offer comfort and comedy. So to help sooth us as we enter the months of shorter, darker days, Ballardworks brings: “Comfort in the Images of Dogs", a multi media group exhibition of artists' representations of dogs. In The Devil’s Dictionary, Ambrose Bierce offers this definition: “DOG, n. A kind of additional or subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world's worship.” And adds that for some, dogs take the “place to which there is no human … aspirant.” Join us for the opening reception on October 17th, to celebrate the month of harvest. Please note that the front left door on Market Street will be open for this exhibit as well as the doors on 30th Avenue. Artist: Myra Lara
Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW Event: October 17th 6pm - 9pm Showing through: November 18th www.facebook.com/events/339552316983070/ When the neighborhood Prius has the tasteless Malthusian slogan "Seattle is Full", you know you're in the technocratic city. When superyachts are "sustainable" but your commute is not, you know you're in the technocratic city. When police are thanked during private "community" Pride events but queer and POC spaces are still overpoliced, you know you're in the technocratic city. Lifeswork towards frivolous apps, efficiency, "smarter" economies and "authentic" experiences but silence when evictions, rent burden, low wages, and homelessness increase - but don't worry, the next private-public partnership will handle it in time. That's life in the technocratic city. Ready to find your coping mechanism? Bio: Myra Lara is an architectural designer, cartoonist, and activist whose work focuses on the right to the city, housing policy, genderqueerness, and multicultural everyday life. Drawing on her many disciplines, taught by institution and untaught by self, she explores these topics via comix, zines, protest art, and tweeting. She's originally from a bordertown in south Texas and has been living in Seattle off-and-on since 2010. You can find her at @nullthread and www.myralara.com Show: The Glass Canvas

Venue: Populuxe Brewing / 826 NW 49th St Event: October 17th 6pm - 9pm Showing: Month of October Keith Lovik considers himself more of a maker than an artist. This local Seattle resident uses old style crafting to bring his myriad of 3 dimensional creatures and critters to life. Whether fuzz or scales or something in-between. The end result is a flourish of color and character that will brighten up your day, and your walls. Take home a small wall mount version of a Chupacabra or Cthulhu, a Dragon Dog or the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. If you needed a space filled with original art you might consider a cute angler fish or a furry monster with an infectious grin. These pieces are unique and fun, each hand crafted and built with love. Populuxe offers special discounts to Ballard Night Out visitors! It's time to send in your October events. The deadline to get on the October map is October 8th. You can let us know to put you on the map by emailing maxx@ballardnightout.com. Nicol Cabe, imagines how biology and technology will smash together in “Effing Robots: How I Taught the A.I. to Stop Worrying and Love Humans”: Artificial Intelligence is on the way, and it will be powerful. What happens to us when it arrives? How will it perceive humanity? Can it learn … to love? After getting hit on by a chatbot, one horny science fiction nerd is on a quest to make it with a new AI overlord. The latest from Cabe playfully explores a meeting of minds, one digital, and one organic. The show combines true stories, real conversations, and, of course, nerdy references. When the artificial intelligence rises, how will we greet it? Adelaide Fringe Festival 2019 audiences raved that Effing Robots “deftly weaves comedic storytelling with some serious science communication” into “a one-woman show that is part girly-chat, part TED talk.” Banjo ballardeer, Aaron J. Shay, combines folk music inspiration with space-faring adventure in “Apocalypse Songs”: Captain Redacted, a resident of a distant future, was sent to explore alternate universes and document his findings in original songs and poetic stories. This show takes audiences to many fantastical places, from sunken towers under monster-infested seas, to cyber-punk rock clubs in foggy mega-cities, all while exploring the nature of discovery and its power to change us (if we let it). This unique and interactive show is part concert, part theater, part storytelling, and all adventure! Fans of folk singers, science jokes, and speculative fiction will find something to enjoy. Audiences have described it as ‘cheerful, gentle, jaunty and filled with wonder,’ and ‘Pete Seeger meets David Bowie!’ This show's cocktail: Two Become One Artist: Hayden Stern (Bioluminator Studios) bioluminator.bigcartel.com/
Venue: Push/Pull / 5484 Shilshole Ave NW Event: September 19th 6pm - 9pm www.facebook.com/events/2465410593497881/ Join us for the opening of Hayden Stern (Bioluminator Studios) show featuring original works from their Trans Tarot series. Showing September 19th through October 15th. The Trans Tarot is a deck illustrated from submitted selfies from the transgender community. Each image celebrates the enormous range of presentation, identity, and life experience that trans people bring to the table. The deck was borne out of the concept that gender, like tarot, is a mystical process of transformation. As a transgender individual, the artist has used symbolism to understand their identity amidst a gendered society. It is their hope that this deck will resonate with their community while inspiring cisgender individuals to examine their own relationship with society, gender, and embodiment. Hayden Stern is an artist whose work is informed by the experience of living in a trans, disabled body. They create two dimensional art in ink, paint, and fiber to tenderly portray the reclamation of body/self in a society that would prefer they were either cured or absent. They are based in unceded Coast Salish Territories (Seattle). Activity: Paper Bag Luminaries Workshop
