Delmark recording artist and Chicago guitarist Rockin' Johnny Burgin makes his Salmon Bay Eagles debut. I quote Elvin Bishop, "he's damn good!" Mark your calendar now for this very special engagement. Rockin' Johnny's last visit to town was at the HWY 99 in Dec and he tore the place up.
Chicago guitarist and Delmark Records recording artist Rockin’ Johnny has been performing across the country and around the world playing 250 shows a year and thrilling audiences everywhere he goes. Born in Pennsylvania Johnny Burgin grew up in Mississippi and South Carolina leaning basic guitar from his father before moving to Chicago in 1988 to attend the University of Chicago where he was also a college radio station DJ. Quickly enamored with the blues Johnny paid his dues and learned his chops in a band called the Ice Cream Men who backed many Chicago players. Johnny was hired by Tail Dragger and played four nights a week on Chicago’s West Side with artists like Lurrie Bell, Jimmy Dawkins, Little Arthur Duncan and Johnny Littlejohn to name a few. Burgin toured the Mid-west with both Pinetop Perkins and then Nationally for two years with drummer Sam Lay. In 1994 Burgin formed his own band with Jimmy Burns on vocals and guitar and they soon scored a Monday night residency at the Smoke Daddy. In 1996 Delmark signed Burn’s with Johnny’s band backing him and releasing Johnny’s own debut Straight Out of Chicago in 1997 followed by Man’s Temptation in 1998 and then the European tours and nationwide tours came along. In 2002 Burgin took a break from the business and touring to be a family man; but returned to the stage in 2009 releasing four more albums between 2010 and 2017. In 2016 Rockin’ Johnny moved to Petaluma, CA in Sonoma County in the heart of the wine region north of the Bay Area. While in California Burgin worked on projects with blues harp masters Andy Santana and Aki Kumar, guitarist, producer and man of all hats Kid Andersen and other West Coast players. In addition to his solo career just a few of the projects Rockin’ Johnny has been on include DeLay Does Chicago with Paul DeLay, Evidence Records 1999; the DVD Tail Dragger Live at Rooster Lounge, Delmark, 2009; Howlin at Greaseland: A Tribute to Howlin’ Wolf, West Tone, 2017 with Alabama Mike, Tail Dragger and Terry Hanck. Burgin has been on more than 15 releases as a sideman since 1992. Rockin’ Johnny’s most recent solo release is Neoprene Fedora which followed 2015s Greetings From Greaseland both also on West Tone. (Note: Greaseland is Kid’s studio) Rockin’ Johnny has a live album in the works and hot off the press is Dos Hombres Wanted with blues harp man from Madrid, Spain Quique Gomez on the prestigious VizzTone Label Group. In 2019 Rockin’ Johnny moved to Portland, Oregon and he will be coming to the Salmon Bay Eagles in Old Town Ballard for a very special engagement coming of a month-long tour of Japan, April 9th to May 9th, and a spot on the Redwood Coast Music Festival in Eureka, CA. Come on down to the club and help me give Rockin’ Johnny a warm Ballard welcome for his very special Salmon Bay Eagles debut, the home of Blues in Seattle every Thursday night for over 29 years and running.
