Hyatt Johnson: The Map Bubbles Onward
Paintings, Drawings and Prints
The Map Bubbles Onward is a show that considers ways in which the past can saturate
the present historical landscape. The title is in part a description of the consistent
structures that hold human history intact; there are universal qualities of
communication, belief, and experience that evade plain view. I see the past as less
refined than modern-day culture and thus more of an honest depiction of what it means
to be human. This transparent view of human-ness is maintained in some areas today,
but only through the continuation of tradition and practice. The pictographs used in the
paintings within the show were generated through extensive self-assignments. Through
this I extracted shapes and characters that are familiar to all humans throughout time.
The prints and drawings take present day events and charge them with mythological
importance. The pieces in the show are used as tools for recollecting the positive parts
of the past and integrating them into present day existence.

Lauren Boilini: Bite Your Tongue
Paintings and drawings
In my current body of work I look at excess, when images of excess become
meaningless and fall into the realm of pattern. This idea of gluttony is reflected in our
current culture, and the practice of biting off more than you can chew has become hard
for me to swallow. We are a hedonistic society, always looking for more until the more
we are looking for loses its meaning.
My studio practice has consistently been large scale, mural-sized paintings and
installations. However, this exhibition mostly consists of small paintings and drawings
that investigate my thoughts on sport and war and their shared brutality. Recently I have
been drawn to images of battles and duels, where opposing forces fight for the same
space. I am interested in what drives us to violence and the destruction of life.
