In a twist on the traditional feminist interpretation of the “male gaze,” GALLERY 1/1 presents a new photography exhibition exploring how men see themselves and other men from behind the camera lens. The featured artists address themes of sexual desire, identity, self-reflection, masculinity, and the dynamics of power that are core critiques of the objectifying male gaze. As you know, we specialize in one-of-a-kind alternative and experimental photographic prints adding an exciting and unique challenge to creating this figurative photography show, The Male Gaze.
Robert Calafiore employs his hand-built pinhole camera to create vivid large-scale one-of-a-kind chromogenic prints of male nude studies inspired by classical Greek and Roman art. His studio practice utilizes elaborate set constructions to tell the personal and universal stories told through everyday objects and intimate relationships. His mastery of photographic process, traditional materials and the reaction between light and chemistry are essential to his ability to make prints which elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary and the every day to a magical place. Robert Flynt is a New York based artist whose work has been widely exhibited in the United States and abroad since 1980. GALLERY 1/1 is pleased to present a selection of Robert's new photographic based monotypes. His artistic subject matter centers on the male body and the yearning and anxieties it engenders. His new work focuses on the counterpoint of eroticism and structure, both organic (anatomy, botanical) and man-made (architecture/mapping). Robert's influential male nude study prints are held in permanent collections of many prestigious institutions including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Brian Henry has spent more than a decade creating an on-going photographic diary of self-portraits in empty spaces. The Baltimore based artist is exploring his feelings of isolation, loneliness and mortality. His photographs area a fleeting memory on fragile papercreated with experimental techniques that distress the images that purposefully enhances the decay and foretells the future. Antonio J. Martinez, a photography professor at Southern Illinois University, trained and participated in the popular sport of MMA as a way to understand why male amateur athletes, young and old, would follow a desire to participate in such a violent sport during their leisure time.The resulting photography series, How to Hug and Other Sublimations of Men is an expressionistic interpretation of the modern sport of mixed martial arts, aka cage fighting, yielding painterly studies of young men experiencing moments of vulnerability and physical duress as they perform in a theatre of sport and manhood that conflates violence and intimacy between two men whom compete to win the respect and praise of spectators. John O’Reilly, the octogenarian master of photographic collage, came to art world success later in life. After his inclusion the 1995 Whitney Biennial at the age of 65, he finally got much deserved recognition for what he had been quietly working on for decades. Trained as a painter, his work often infuses art history, subtle erotica and nude self-portraiture into tableaus that tell a very personal story. John's work is included numerous museums collections, among them the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Eric Potts, a multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles, uses self-portraiture with a focus on the human body to create intense personal moments in which the barriers of artist and subject begin to erode. Each of his Polaroids explores a different view of the male body in which the identifiers of our unquestionable reality destabilize; allowing the viewer to be lured into a space where the male body is recontextualized as flowing through identity, fragility, abstraction, and organic form. Robert A. Williams is based in the Shenandoah Valley of rural Virginia and GALLERY 1/1is excited to present his brand new self-portrait ambrotypes. This series of photographic glass plates are intimately linked to his sixteen-year long writing project titled The Changing Rooms, in which Robert explores his evolution of recovery, transformation and journey of self-discovery. The exhibition will also have a selection of vintage vernacular snapshots available from the renowned collection of Seattle’s own Robert E Jackson. His photographs have been featured in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Forth Worth, Texas as well as numerous fine art galleries and publications. Over the last twenty years Robert has built an acclaimed collection of more than 12,000 snapshots.
